Scripture

Jude 1:1-3, NIV

“Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James,

To those who have been called, who are loved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ:

Mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance.

Dear friends, although I was eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.”

Additional Scripture References:

Deuteronomy 2:31, 1 Corinthians 13:13, 1 John 4:7-12, James 4:1-2, Matthew 5:23-24, Ephesians 6:12

Main Idea

Faith is a gift, but it’s also a fight. When God gives you something, He doesn’t always hand it to you, sometimes He points to it and says, “There it is”. The Israelites knew what that felt like. God promised them a new land, but told them, “I have begun to give it to you; now begin to take possession.” In other words, God started it, but they had to step into it. That’s how faith works. God invites us to move toward what He’s already declared is ours. Along the way, we learn that victory is never passive. It takes courage to show up, humility to surrender, and love to keep fighting.

God said you would win. He didn’t say you wouldn’t have to fight.

1. Win the War Within

Before we can win the battles around us, we need to confront the ones within us. James 4:1 reminds us that external fights are often the result of internal conflicts in the battleground of our souls and minds. There is a war inside of us where jealousy, pride, control, and unmet expectations rise up, often leading us to blame others for the way we feel and react.

Like smoke rising from a fire, our emotions reveal what’s burning beneath the surface. Anger, bitterness, and resentment are signs that something deeper in our hearts needs healing. The only way to win this inner war is to invite God into it. Peace begins within. You’re not weak for struggling; you’re strong for surrendering.

For your additional study: James 4:1-2, NIV

Victory begins with vulnerability before God.
We can’t win the war around us, if we don’t first wage the war within us.
Loving ourselves is the baseline for loving others.

You can’t conquer what you don’t confront

What helps you find peace before reacting in frustration or anger?

2. Win the War Together

Faith was never meant to be a solo mission. We’re part of a spiritual army, called to fight with others, not against them. The cross doesn’t only say, “You are forgiven.” It also says, “You must forgive.” Unity rooted in love is both our strength and our strategy.

When we contend for faith, we also contend for love, the kind that strengthens our families, heals our communities, and brings hope to those who haven’t yet experienced the love of Jesus. The truth is, we can’t win battles in the world if we’re losing them at home. The fight for faith starts where we are: in our homes, our friendships, and our church family. So ask yourself: who’s standing beside you? Are you on the same side, contending together in love?

For your additional study: Matthew 5:23-24

Nothing weakens an army faster than division.
Healing begins when we stop fighting each other and start fighting together.
Forgiveness is hard, but unforgiveness is harder.

Secret relationship healing phrases: 1) “I’m sorry,” 2) “I forgive you.”

Are there any relationships in your life where God might be calling you to take a step toward forgiveness or restoration?

Summary

Life without love is empty, which is why we fight for it. It’s not easy, but it’s always worth it. As we keep showing up and fighting for what matters most, we can rest knowing that with God, every battle is moving us from struggle to victory. When we learn to love ourselves and those around us, God calls us to take that same love beyond our circles and into the world. Realizing that love isn’t just our strategy, it’s also our goal, the fight stops being about survival and starts being about purpose.

Call To Action

Let this week remind you that battles do not define you. How you fight them does.

  • Reflect: Where have you been resisting God’s work within you?
  • Respond: Reach out to reconcile with someone with whom you have been at odds.
  • Reframe: See your current battle not as a setback but as a setup for victory.

Come ready to discuss this next crew week!

Prayer Prompts

As you reflect on Sunday’s message, here are some guided prayers and scriptures you can use over the next week. If you're looking for ways to grow deeper in this specific area, let these words cover, challenge, and encourage you along the way.

  1. Prayer for Inner Surrender

God, reveal the battles within me that keep me from peace. Help me release pride, jealousy, and control so Your Spirit can bring healing to my heart. Teach me to find victory not by striving but by surrendering to You.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10

  1. Prayer for Unity and Forgiveness

Lord, remind me that faith is not a solo mission. Help me fight with others, not against them. Give me the grace to forgive as I have been forgiven and the humility to walk in love and unity with those around me.

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” 1 Peter 4:8

  1. Prayer for Love in Action

Jesus, teach me to fight with love. Let my words, actions, and attitude reflect Your heart. Show me how to love the lost, the hurting, and even those who have hurt me. Let my life be proof of Your love at work.

“Let all that you do be done in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:14

  1. Prayer for Faith that Sees Beyond

Father, help me to see what You see. When life feels heavy or uncertain, remind me that faith does not ignore reality; it sees more. Open my eyes to hope where others see defeat, and purpose where others see pain.

“For we live by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7

Scripture

Ephesians 3:20-21 NKJV

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Additional Scripture References: John 11:32; Job 13:15; John 11:5; Matthew 14:31

Main Idea

Life often doesn't meet our expectations, leading to frustration and disappointment. We may hope for one outcome, only to be met with something entirely different, creating a gap between what we expected and what we experienced. This gap can lead us to question God, our faith, and our hope. But through stories like that of Lazarus and Job, we learn that God isn’t in the business of just meeting expectations, He’s in the business of exceeding them.

God’s power to perform exceeds our ability to ask

1. Hope and Expectation

Faith grows through hope and trusting God’s timing. Positive expectations can fuel faith, while unmet expectations can lead to disappointment. Often, we expect something specific from God but find ourselves limiting Him to only a particular outcome. When we don’t see Him come through just as we expected, we can find ourselves frustrated and disappointed — where was God? The truth is, God is always at work. We may not always see Him moving, or understand His plan, but He has something greater in mind.

Disappointment can tempt us to give up on expectations, but it’s an opportunity to strengthen our faith
God’s plans always exceed our expectations
Don't allow your expectations of what God was “supposed” to do get in the way of what He wants to do

If God always met your expectations, how could He ever exceed them?

What areas of your life are you waiting for God to show up? How can you operate from faith in the present as you hope for the future?

2. Endurance and Enjoyment

Job’s story is a powerful example of enduring pain and disappointment without losing faith. Even in his suffering, Job declared, “Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him.” Despite the immense loss, he continued to trust God, showing us that our hope can remain, even in the midst of struggle. Endurance is the ability to trust that God is working, even when we can’t see it.

Endurance strengthens our faith through trials
God hasn’t called us to merely endure life, He’s called us to enjoy it
Enjoying life is appreciating the little, it’s not a pain-free life, but a grateful one

We can say: “God, I don’t understand everything but I trust you in everything”

How has a difficult season strengthened your appreciation for God’s blessings?

Summary

Possibly the greatest source of frustration in life is unmet expectations. The difference between what we expected versus what we experienced often leads us to stop expecting. But there’s an invitation of faith amidst the frustration. Don’t lower your expectations; lift your faith. Give God something to exceed. God can do it, the question is: can you believe it?

Call To Action

Identify areas where you may be limiting God by expecting a specific outcome. Practice finding gratitude by celebrating the little things.
