Scripture

Judges 16:4-6

Some time later, he fell in love with a woman in the Valley of Sorek whose name was Delilah.  The rulers of the Philistines went to her and said, “See if you can lure him into showing you the secret of his great strength and how we can overpower him so we may tie him up and subdue him. Each one of us will give you eleven hundred shekels[a] of silver.” So Delilah said to Samson, “Tell me the secret of your great strength and how you can be tied up and subdued.”

Additional Scripture References: 1 Corinthians 10:13; James 4:7; 2 Tim 2:22; Luke 22:46; Genesis 3:13; Hosea 10:13-14; James 1:26; 1 John 1:7-9; Proverbs 26:28-20; Matthew 18:6; Proverbs 28:10; Titus 3:3-7; Romans 12:1-2

Main Idea

As fishing lures are used to bait the fish, temptation lures us to fall in its trap. No one is exempt from being tempted. Our fallen human nature desires the things of the flesh. Daily our mind and thoughts are given an invitation to engage in such things like, lust, envy, greed, pride and so much more. But we have been given free will to decide whether to take on this invitation or not. When facing temptation you can resist and run.

Temptation is manageable; you can opt in or out

1. Temptation vs. Trials

Temptation is the enticement of our flesh. Trials are circumstances or events that challenge us.  We need a strategy when dealing with both. We are called to persist and walk through trials, but we are called to resist and walk away from temptation.

James 4:7

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Temptation is not a sin, it is an invitation away from God’s heart. An invitation you do not have to accept
Every time you resist temptation the resistance makes you stronger
Pursue God’s presence, for an empty soul is an easy prey for temptation

It’s not just what we run away from, but who we run towards

How does understanding that temptation is common to all mankind change our perspective on our personal struggles?

2. Deception vs. Delusion

Samson gave into temptation instead of resisting and fleeing from it. Because of this he was deceived by Delilah to the point of delusion,  becoming his own worst enemy. Being deceived is believing a lie was true. Being delusional is believing a lie to be true in spite of evidence that shows the contrary.

Proverbs 28:10

The rich are wise in their own eyes; one who is poor and discerning sees how deluded they are.

Do not be deceived by your passions and pleasures.
Delusion can look like chasing after temporary highs that keep leaving you empty.
The way to differentiate between deception and delusion is discernment.

Discernment is not knowing the difference between right and wrong. It is knowing the difference between right and almost right.” — Charles Spurgeon

Reflect on times when you were deluded by chasing temporary highs or worldly pleasures. What helped you recognize the emptiness in them?

Summary

We don’t compromise a relationship with God, we lay everything down and pick up our cross to follow Him. Temptation is often a result of our own desires, not just external forces. While the flesh has a will, God's purpose for us is greater. To live a pure life, we need a clear vision of what that looks like and must resist temptation, becoming stronger each time we do. The strategy when undergoing spiritual battles is in our daily walk with Jesus. Temptation requires resistance, while trials require persistence.

Call To Action

Reflect on your life and past decisions, and ask yourself honestly: Where does temptation occur? When does temptation occur? Who are you with when temptation occurs? What things are deceiving me? Is there anything that I've become delusional to? Once you’ve answered these questions, decide to break free from the temptations that lead you away from him and interfere with your spiritual walk.

Scripture

Ephesians 3:20-21 NKJV

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Main Idea

Life often doesn't meet our expectations, leading to frustration and disappointment. We may hope for one outcome, only to be met with something entirely different, creating a gap between what we expected and what we experienced. This gap can lead us to question God, our faith, and our hope. But through stories like that of Lazarus and Job, we learn that God isn’t in the business of just meeting expectations, He’s in the business of exceeding them.

God’s power to perform exceeds our ability to ask

1. Hope and Expectation

Faith grows through hope and trusting God’s timing. Positive expectations can fuel faith, while unmet expectations can lead to disappointment. Often, we expect something specific from God but find ourselves limiting Him to only a particular outcome. When we don’t see Him come through just as we expected, we can find ourselves frustrated and disappointed — where was God? The truth is, God is always at work. We may not always see Him moving, or understand His plan, but He has something greater in mind.

Disappointment can tempt us to give up on expectations, but it’s an opportunity to strengthen our faith
God’s plans always exceed our expectations
Don't allow your expectations of what God was “supposed” to do get in the way of what He wants to do

If God always met your expectations, how could He ever exceed them?

What areas of your life are you waiting for God to show up? How can you operate from faith in the present as you hope for the future?

2. Endurance and Enjoyment

Job’s story is a powerful example of enduring pain and disappointment without losing faith. Even in his suffering, Job declared, “Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him.” Despite the immense loss, he continued to trust God, showing us that our hope can remain, even in the midst of struggle. Endurance is the ability to trust that God is working, even when we can’t see it.

Endurance strengthens our faith through trials
God hasn’t called us to merely endure life, He’s called us to enjoy it
Enjoying life is appreciating the little, it’s not a pain-free life, but a grateful one

We can say: “God, I don’t understand everything but I trust you in everything”

How has a difficult season strengthened your appreciation for God’s blessings?

Summary

Possibly the greatest source of frustration in life is unmet expectations. The difference between what we expected versus what we experienced often leads us to stop expecting. But there’s an invitation of faith amidst the frustration. Don’t lower your expectations; lift your faith. Give God something to exceed. God can do it, the question is: can you believe it?

Call To Action

Identify areas where you may be limiting God by expecting a specific outcome. Practice finding gratitude by celebrating the little things.
