Scripture

Exodus 23:19 NKJV

“The first of the firstfruits of your land you shall bring into the house of the Lord your God.”

Additional Scripture References: Exodus 13:1-2 NIV, 13:13 NIV, Leviticus 27:30 NIV, Matthew 23:23-24 ,  Malachi 3:10-12 NIV

Main Idea

For most, Monday is often viewed as the start of a week. However, our calendars indicate that the first day of any week is always Sunday– the Lord’s Day. Honoring God means putting Him in his rightful place, as first in all things. Many of us set aside Sunday as a day to honor God, and start our week right, and just like with our time, the principle of honoring God first also applies to our money. The Biblical principle of tithing, is an ageless truth which commands God’s people to bring the tithe (10%) of our income into the Lord’s storehouse. The tithe is God’s design, which helps us set our priorities where they should be-honoring God, and His people.

Tithing is not me giving God 10% of my money, it’s him letting me keep 90% of his money.

1. What is the tithe?

Tithing is a biblical principle, set by God before the foundation of the law. The tithe of our firstfruits was present before the law, during, and after. In godly principle, there is something special about the first! God calls us to give him a tenth of our firstfruits, not because we owe him something, but because he first gave us everything.

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house”- Malachi 3:10

Tithing is giving back 10% our income to the Lord
Tithing is bringing the first of the firstfruits of our Labor to the Lord
Tithes are brought into the Lord’s House

When I set the tenth apart, God sets the rest apart.

Can you share about a time God changed your perspective on tithing? How did applying His perspective change your life?

2. Why do we tithe?

Tithing is a form of obedience in which God entrusts us with His money, and we honor Him by giving back a portion. Ultimately, the tithe goes beyond our physical resources; God doesn't need your money, he is after your heart.  When we choose to tithe our firstfruits, it checks our heart and brings God’s blessing. The mission of tithing is to build God’s storehouse and serve His people. In our finances, our money needs a mission, and the mission needs money.

“The purpose of tithing is to teach you always to put God first in your lives.” Deuteronomy 14:23 TLB

Tithing brings God’s blessing and honors Him
The act of tithing checks our heart and strengthens our faith
Tithing provides for God’s house using His money

Blessing is a benefit of the tithe, but obedience is the basis of the tithe.

How does the understanding that tithing is a form of obedience resonate with your faith journey, and what role does obedience play in your relationship with God?

Summary

As humans, it is in our nature to want to be first, and strive to be our best. When we shift our focus on God, rather than ourselves, we not only reflect the heart of Jesus, but God’s hand of blessing falls upon us as we give HIM our first, and our best. God so loved the world that he gave. He does not withhold a good thing from those that love him, and when we reciprocate that love we put God in his rightful place and see him for all that he is. Provider, Father, Protector, and Lord of all.

Scripture

Ephesians 3:20-21 NKJV

Main Idea

Life often doesn't meet our expectations, leading to frustration and disappointment. We may hope for one outcome, only to be met with something entirely different, creating a gap between what we expected and what we experienced. This gap can lead us to question God, our faith, and our hope. But through stories like that of Lazarus and Job, we learn that God isn’t in the business of just meeting expectations, He’s in the business of exceeding them.

God’s power to perform exceeds our ability to ask

1. Hope and Expectation

Faith grows through hope and trusting God’s timing. Positive expectations can fuel faith, while unmet expectations can lead to disappointment. Often, we expect something specific from God but find ourselves limiting Him to only a particular outcome. When we don’t see Him come through just as we expected, we can find ourselves frustrated and disappointed — where was God? The truth is, God is always at work. We may not always see Him moving, or understand His plan, but He has something greater in mind.

Disappointment can tempt us to give up on expectations, but it’s an opportunity to strengthen our faith
God’s plans always exceed our expectations
Don't allow your expectations of what God was “supposed” to do get in the way of what He wants to do

If God always met your expectations, how could He ever exceed them?

What areas of your life are you waiting for God to show up? How can you operate from faith in the present as you hope for the future?

2. Endurance and Enjoyment

Job’s story is a powerful example of enduring pain and disappointment without losing faith. Even in his suffering, Job declared, “Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him.” Despite the immense loss, he continued to trust God, showing us that our hope can remain, even in the midst of struggle. Endurance is the ability to trust that God is working, even when we can’t see it.

Endurance strengthens our faith through trials
God hasn’t called us to merely endure life, He’s called us to enjoy it
Enjoying life is appreciating the little, it’s not a pain-free life, but a grateful one

We can say: “God, I don’t understand everything but I trust you in everything”

How has a difficult season strengthened your appreciation for God’s blessings?

Summary

Possibly the greatest source of frustration in life is unmet expectations. The difference between what we expected versus what we experienced often leads us to stop expecting. But there’s an invitation of faith amidst the frustration. Don’t lower your expectations; lift your faith. Give God something to exceed. God can do it, the question is: can you believe it?

Call To Action

Identify areas where you may be limiting God by expecting a specific outcome. Practice finding gratitude by celebrating the little things.
