What attracts us to each other? Is it chemistry, is it looks, or the thought of what could be? Attraction is real, but it should lead to something deeper than just feelings. The wrong attraction will drain you, but a God-ordained attraction will remain through every season. In Genesis, God reminds us, — it is not good for us to be alone. This statement doesn’t just apply to our romantic relationships, it can be seen throughout all areas of life. We were designed for connection. Our God is relational and He has created us for communion, first with Him, and next with those around us. One of the main ways we reflect His image here on Earth is through our relationships. That is why we must look to him for the blueprint of a healthy union.
Quality of life grows through the quality of our relationships
Like choosing a meal at your favorite restaurant, or picking a movie to watch on Netflix, more options haven’t made us better at choosing; they’ve made us slower and less satisfied. Too many options often lead to no decision at all. Or worse—a bad one. Decisions require logic, wisdom, emotions, connection, intuition and discernment. As we ask God to help us understand who the right person/people to do life with are, we should understand that God’s plan is that we would collaborate and not become codependent on anyone. God is our dependency.
The second most important decision you’ll ever make—after following Jesus—is who you’ll do life with. Dating is an investigation. It’s not a rom-com; it’s research. Who you date doesn’t just affect your present—it shapes your future. Just as God was intentional with Adam in Genesis 2, we need to be intentional in our relationships. God didn’t just give Adam someone—He gave him the right someone. It wasn’t random. Eve was suitable, aligned, and compatible. As we trust God in our relationships, He does the same.
Jesus commanded us to love one another, as He loves us. We are called to love our partner, as God loves His church. Creating healthy relationships horizontally begins with aligning our vertical relationship with Jesus. In the same way, we get to know Jesus through spending time with him, we can apply the same principle to our romantic relationships. When attraction follows God’s order, it doesn’t just lead to romance—it leads to covenant.
This week, spend time reflecting with God on the quality of your relationships. Ask Him to reveal to you what areas you can grow in.
Action Steps:
Take time this week to ask yourself the 5 compatibility questions.
If you’re in a relationship or married, use these questions to strengthen your current connection.
Lord, guide me to relationships that reflect Your love and wisdom. Help me choose connection over convenience, commitment over chemistry, and purpose over attraction. May my relationships honor You and bring life to those around me.
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17
Lord, You said that a house divided against itself cannot stand. I pray against division in my relationships, family, and community. Where there is discord, bring unity. Where there is misunderstanding, bring clarity. Let Your love be the foundation that holds us together, and give me the wisdom to be a peacemaker in every situation.
If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. Mark 3:25
Lord, help me trust Your timing. When I grow impatient, strengthen my heart. Remind me that waiting is not wasted and that You are preparing me for what’s ahead. Let me find peace in Your perfect plan.
Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. Psalm 27:14
