Scripture

MATTHEW 6:9-13

This, then, is how you should pray: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.”

REFERENCES: MATTHEW 6:9-16, 7:1, 26:39; 1 THESSALONIANS 5:18; 1 JOHN 5:14-15; JAMES 1:5-8; JOHN 14:1-7

Main Idea

Has the idea of prayer ever intimidated you, as if real prayers can only be prayed by an elite few? Sometimes prayer can come across as a secret, exclusive art, like, “If you know, you know.” Now let’s instead reframe that “IYKYK” concept to mean, “If you know Jesus, you know how to pray.” The art of prayer is not secretive, it’s personal. Prayer is about an open and honest heart, seeking to know Jesus more deeply, and trusting that he will continue to reveal himself as you press in. Consider that when Jesus taught his first followers how to pray, he met them exactly where they already were. He took the daily prayers they had learned from childhood, and showed how those familiar words could be used to bring every part of their lives into God’s presence. In essence, Jesus was teaching them, and all his followers for all time, that “You know how to pray!” Prayer is not about a formula, it’s about friendship with Jesus. No matter if you’ve felt intimidated, exhausted, or condemned by the thought of prayer, you always have access to Jesus: just call on his name! Prayer is your opening to the gateway of heaven, where you can know and be fully known by the one who created you. Don’t back away from the awesome access you have through prayer. Simply open up your mouth and be honest with God.

If you know Jesus, you know how to pray.

1. Kingdom Access

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” —Matthew 6:9-10

When we approach God, we recognize the body of Christ as a family calling him our Father and submitting to his will. He has connected us all through adoption by the blood of Jesus. In prayer, we pause and recognize that he is holy and surrender to his will above our own. His will for us is to give thanks in every circumstance.

Gratitude gives us a chance to verbalize how much God means to us
We’re a family of believers and God is our Holy Father
The kingdom of heaven is our hope, we have a kingdom mindset not a worldly mindset

We’re not just fascinated by heaven, we’re fastened to the promise of heaven.

How do you approach moments in life when you are unsure of the will of God?

2. Daily Vulnerability

“Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.” —Matthew 6:11-13

Time and honesty are fundamental in all relationships. The same goes for our relationship with our Father. Being in God’s presence helps us clearly spot temptation. We also can’t forget that confession is just as important as our petitions and our praises.

We need daily time spent with God to energize us and keep us spiritually nourished
Be sincere and specific when seeking God’s forgiveness
As we forgive others, God forgives us

Pray, “God I need you, I missed the mark.”

What has helped you navigate through moments of unforgiveness? Share how God has given you strength to forgive in these moments.

Summary

Take heart, as a believer you have direct access to the throne room of God. There’s no secret code for you to learn or exclusive experience to have, simply enter in through prayer. Remember, prayer has never been about how eloquent you sound, but about a heart that is open and humble before God. So don’t remain silent. Talk to Jesus, the way the truth and the life. Join your prayers with those of the family of believers, God wants to hear your voice. Your prayer life protects you because it tethers your will to the Father’s will. In every communication with him, he helps you by removing the debris and renewing you. As you pursue him, know that you are being changed by his presence and filled up with every good thing you need to live this life.

Call To Action

Take time to memorize and meditate on the Lord’s Prayer.

The Barna Institute reports that the average time a Christian spends in prayer is 1 minute a day.  Challenge yourself to spend time fostering a relationship with God.

Scripture

‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭5:12-14‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”

Hebrews‬ ‭6‬:‭1‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity….” ‭

Additional Scripture References: ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭119‬:‭9‬-‭16‬ ‭NIV‬‬ 1 Peter 2:9, 1 Samuel 16:7, 1 Samuel‬ ‭16:13‬ ‭NIV‬, 1 Samuel 16:18, 1 Samuel 17:15, ‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭17:38-40‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Main Idea

Have you ever tried to run a long distance? If you have, you know that it requires real and consistent training to achieve your goal. No matter what your intention, without training, you may find it difficult to arrive at the finish line. Life is a marathon, not a sprint. In the same way, our journey of faith is one of endurance. Training at every stage of our development is important. Time does not dictate maturity, but our training will. You can be old and immature, and young and mature. It’s not about arriving, but simply starting. We can trust that God will give us everything we need at the time that we need it. We’re not delayed, we’re destined!

If you want to win the battles of life you need training.

1. You Are Set Apart

Our becoming comes from our believing. Do you believe that you’re called? That you’re chosen? That you’re cared for by God? Securing our identity in Christ allows us to develop and mature with him. If we don’t know who we are, we will never know who we can be. You’re not like the world, you’re not like everyone else, you’re not missing out.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation,God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. [1 Peter 2:9]

What God has for you is for you
You can’t be like what you are called to lead
It’s not about being more gifted, it’s about being more disciplined

You are not delayed, you’re being developed.

In what area do you find it difficult to believe what God says about you?

2. You Are Growing

You are called and chosen by God. You are anointed but may not yet be appointed. Maturity prepares you to steward what God has called you to. An untrained David could never beat Goliath. He was able to fight appropriately because he had trained for years. Spiritual maturity is the process of becoming more Christ-like in character, attitude and behavior. You can’t go where God’s taking you without maturing along the way.

7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” [1 Samuel 16:7]

Time will not dictate your maturity, your training will
The mark of maturity is not just hearing the word, but listening to what the Word says
Although you might have not walked in it yet, you are it

If you never train, you will never become

What are you doing today to mature for tomorrow?

Summary

Availability unlocks the door of maturity in our lives. King Saul was supposed to fight but David made himself available for growth. His willingness to embrace the season he found himself in and make himself available to be developed allowed him to step up when he was called upon. Are you open to maturity? Are you open to growth? Are you open to change? The world will try to put on fear, insecurity, and failure. Pick up courage, security, and peace. God’s strength is with you as you daily surrender to Him.

Call To Action

Reflect this week on how you are investing your time to mature. Commit to spend time in one of these 5 areas:

  1. Dedicated time to prayer
  2. Time off of social media
  3. Sabbath/Rest
  1. Reading the word
  2. Serving others

Be prepared to share your experience at Crew next time!
