Scripture

1 CORINTHIANS 2:9-10

However, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.

REFERENCES: MATTHEW 6:7-8, JAMES 5:16-18, 1 KINGS 18:36-37, REVELATION 4:8, 1 THESSALONIANS 5:16-18, 1 CORINTHIANS 10:31, ROMANS 8:26-28

Main Idea

If you ever felt like you just couldn’t wrap your brain around prayer, you are not the only one. There are many examples in the Bible that point out that we cannot comprehend the mind of God. But take a step back, isn’t prayer simply a means of connecting with God? When our thoughts and questions about prayer start to take over it gets in the way of what really matters. We can instead choose to keep it simple and connect with God on a soul level, heart to heart. Our minds can be put at rest while we exercise our deep desire to let go and come to God with our simple words. Even when we don’t have the words, we’re given the promise that the Holy Spirit comes alongside us, interceding on our behalf with every single sigh and groan that we make. He already knows what we need before we speak a word. So no, our prayers don't have to be grandiose. We don’t have to use the most ornamental language we can think up. The antics used to impress others with our prayers are not what prayer warriors are made of. They only serve as distractions from tapping into what the Holy Spirit is already doing. As we give our minds a break, and pour our hearts out in prayer we can approach God with childlike faith.

When you pray from the heart, it turns off the brain and releases the soul.

1. Continual Prayer

Praying should be continuous, like breathing. God breathed life into us so we give him glory with every breath we take. Every circumstance gives us the opportunity to praise Jesus or to pray to Jesus. When we are feeling joyful or feeling hopeless, we can use that moment to talk to Jesus.

“I don't often spend more than half an hour in prayer - but I never go more than half an hour without praying.” — Smith Wiglesworth

When we make a conscious decision to make prayer a habit, it becomes second nature
It’s not a mind exercise, it’s a soul exercise
The power of a praying community enables us to pray continually

When we open our hearts, simple prayers become supernatural.

What is your go to “repeat” prayer when you don’t know what to say?

2. Spirit-led Prayer

Being Spirit-led in our prayers means surrendering our minds to God. We can easily get tired of waiting for answers. That’s why we need to rely on God’s Spirit, right beside us, helping us along the way.

The Holy Spirit prays on our behalf
In praying for the Spirit to empower us, we receive both the gifts and the fruits of the Spirit
We’re given gifts to build up the body of believers, they don’t make us elite, they make us better servants

Help me, Holy Spirit!

How has God equipped you with the fruit of the Spirit when you needed it most?

Summary

Our souls were uniquely designed and created to connect to the spirit of the living God. Consider how you are thinking, is your faith and prayer life consumed by your thoughts or questions? Faith begins where understanding ends. The truth is, we will never truly understand the ways of God, because if we did, he wouldn’t be God. Connecting with him may be an intellectual process as he changes the way we think, but walking with Jesus is so much more than that. The next time you find yourself at a loss for words to pray, stop and recognize who God is and ask the Holy Spirit to help you. Remember that we exist on account of his very breath, so even now, every breath we take is a prayer; from your heart to his.

Call To Action

Do you find yourself consumed by anxious thoughts? Challenge yourself this week to grab every thought captive by saying a repetitive prayer every time you feel challenged or cornered. Find your #RPF, resting prayer face!

Scripture

Ephesians 3:20-21 NKJV

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Main Idea

Life often doesn't meet our expectations, leading to frustration and disappointment. We may hope for one outcome, only to be met with something entirely different, creating a gap between what we expected and what we experienced. This gap can lead us to question God, our faith, and our hope. But through stories like that of Lazarus and Job, we learn that God isn’t in the business of just meeting expectations, He’s in the business of exceeding them.

God’s power to perform exceeds our ability to ask

1. Hope and Expectation

Faith grows through hope and trusting God’s timing. Positive expectations can fuel faith, while unmet expectations can lead to disappointment. Often, we expect something specific from God but find ourselves limiting Him to only a particular outcome. When we don’t see Him come through just as we expected, we can find ourselves frustrated and disappointed — where was God? The truth is, God is always at work. We may not always see Him moving, or understand His plan, but He has something greater in mind.

Disappointment can tempt us to give up on expectations, but it’s an opportunity to strengthen our faith
God’s plans always exceed our expectations
Don't allow your expectations of what God was “supposed” to do get in the way of what He wants to do

If God always met your expectations, how could He ever exceed them?

What areas of your life are you waiting for God to show up? How can you operate from faith in the present as you hope for the future?

2. Endurance and Enjoyment

Job’s story is a powerful example of enduring pain and disappointment without losing faith. Even in his suffering, Job declared, “Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him.” Despite the immense loss, he continued to trust God, showing us that our hope can remain, even in the midst of struggle. Endurance is the ability to trust that God is working, even when we can’t see it.

Endurance strengthens our faith through trials
God hasn’t called us to merely endure life, He’s called us to enjoy it
Enjoying life is appreciating the little, it’s not a pain-free life, but a grateful one

We can say: “God, I don’t understand everything but I trust you in everything”

How has a difficult season strengthened your appreciation for God’s blessings?

Summary

Possibly the greatest source of frustration in life is unmet expectations. The difference between what we expected versus what we experienced often leads us to stop expecting. But there’s an invitation of faith amidst the frustration. Don’t lower your expectations; lift your faith. Give God something to exceed. God can do it, the question is: can you believe it?

Call To Action

Identify areas where you may be limiting God by expecting a specific outcome. Practice finding gratitude by celebrating the little things.
