This Armor Still Fits

Last Crew's Call to Action

God calls for us to forgive while maintaining boundaries necessary to steward and nurture our souls. This week, lean in to the wisdom of Solomon and study the book of Proverbs to help you develop tools for cultivating Godly relationships while asking God for the courage to forgive. Scripture

Ephesians 6:10-12 (ESV)

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Additional Scripture References: Ephesians 6:13–18; Isaiah 59:17; Judges 6:12; 1 Samuel 17; John 14:6; Romans 12:2; Isaiah 54:17; 1 John 4:4; Psalm 27:1; Philippians 4:13; Ecclesiastes 4:12; Hebrews 10:39; Deuteronomy 31:6; 2 Timothy 4:17; Isaiah 52:12; Exodus 15:3

Main Idea

Imagine a scorching hot day without any sunblock. What good would it do if the sunblock stayed on the shelf at home, never applied? The only way to be protected from the sun is by using it. In the same way, God has given us spiritual armor for our protection, yet so often we either forget to put it on or fail to recognize that we’re in a spiritual battle at all. The weapons God has placed in our hands are not physical; they are spiritual. And before you convince yourself that you don’t have what it takes to fight, remember this: God has already called you a warrior and the battle has already been won. What He has placed within you is greater than anything that comes against you. The enemy’s schemes are real, but as you wrestle through it, never forget: you carry the sword of God’s Word, sharp and ready to defend.

Even if you don’t feel like a warrior doesn’t mean you can’t dress like one

1. Put on God’s Armor

The worst fight to be in is the one you didn’t know you were in. The truth is, life brings battles and we all face an opponent that schemes against us, waiting for the right moment to attack. In Ephesians 6, we learn our battle against the devil is at close range. It is a wrestling match, and we don’t have to walk in fear. Putting on the full armor of God, we are spiritually armed with the Belt of Truth, the Breastplate of Righteousness, the Shoes of Peace, the Shield of Faith, the Helmet of Salvation, and the Sword of the Spirit.

For your additional study: Ephesians 6:13-18

The wrong armor will weigh you down, it doesn’t protect you - it paralyzes you.
The Shoes of Peace give you grip when everything else is slipping.
The Shield of Faith is not just individual, but also communal; when we interlock we can press forward.

God’s armor is one size fits all.

In what situations do you find yourself trying to fight on your own strength instead of God’s strength?

2. Keep on God’s Armor

Now that you have put on the full armor of God, you’re prepared for the battle. Fighting against the tactics of the enemy requires you to learn how to use the tools God has given you and keep on the armor. The battle doesn’t stop when the prayer has been answered. When you spend time alone with God in prayer and in His word, and as you go through your day praying at all times, the enemy does not have a fighting chance. There is scripture for every situation in our lives, and when we commit to memorizing and speaking it, we will be victorious because God has already won the battle.

For your additional study: Isaiah 54:17, 1 John 4:4, Psalm 27:1, Philippians 4:13

The power is in declaring scripture. A scripture in your head is knowledge. A scripture in your mouth is a weapon.
Prayer is the power source. It is the application, power, and the way we suit up.
You need a scripture for every situation. You need to fight with the Sword of the Spirit.

If you fight what’s right in front of you, God will handle what’s around you.

What distracts you from praying consistently, and how can you overcome that?

Summary

Life feels like a fight because it is one. But it’s not a fistfight or a sprint, it’s a wrestling match. The enemy is not trying to knock us out in one blow; he is trying to wear us down little by little until we give up.

There will always be a battle in front of us. But what Paul is teaching us in Ephesians 6 is that we don’t need to be afraid if we are dressed for this battle: truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the Word, all powered by prayer. Like Gideon, God has called you a mighty warrior before you ever step into battle. Paul says to put on the full armor of God, not your neighbor’s armor, not your favorite podcaster’s armor, but God’s armor. The same armor David and Isaiah used still fits.

Call To Action

This week, don’t leave your armor sitting on the shelf. Just like sunscreen only works when you apply it, God’s armor only protects you when you put it on. Suit up daily through prayer, Scripture, and steady trust in His Word.

Reflect: Where in your life are you most vulnerable to the enemy’s schemes? Identify which piece of the armor you need to strengthen.

Respond: Choose one Scripture that speaks directly to your current battle and begin declaring it out loud every day.

Reframe: Start each morning with a simple prayer, “Lord, dress me in Your armor today.” Walk into your day with the confidence that the armor still fits.

Prayer Prompts

As you reflect on Sunday’s message, here are some guided prayers and scriptures you can use over the next week. If you're looking for ways to grow deeper in this specific area, let these words cover, challenge, and encourage you along the way.

1. Prayer for Strength to Stand Firm

Lord, when the fight feels heavy, help me stand in Your strength, not my own. Teach me to hold my ground and not shrink back in fear.

“Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.” (Ephesians 6:10)

2. Prayer for a Guarded Heart and Renewed Mind

Jesus, cover my heart with Your righteousness and protect my thoughts with the helmet of salvation. Renew my mind daily with Your Word.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” (Romans 12:2)

3. Prayer for Peace in the Battle

God, give me a steady footing in the middle of chaos. Let Your peace anchor me when everything else feels shaky.

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7)

4. Prayer for Bold Faith and Community

Holy Spirit, strengthen my faith so that I can extinguish every flaming arrow of the enemy. Help me lock shields with others and fight together, not alone.

“In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.” (Ephesians 6:16)

Scripture

Ephesians 3:20-21 NKJV

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Main Idea

Life often doesn't meet our expectations, leading to frustration and disappointment. We may hope for one outcome, only to be met with something entirely different, creating a gap between what we expected and what we experienced. This gap can lead us to question God, our faith, and our hope. But through stories like that of Lazarus and Job, we learn that God isn’t in the business of just meeting expectations, He’s in the business of exceeding them.

God’s power to perform exceeds our ability to ask

1. Hope and Expectation

Faith grows through hope and trusting God’s timing. Positive expectations can fuel faith, while unmet expectations can lead to disappointment. Often, we expect something specific from God but find ourselves limiting Him to only a particular outcome. When we don’t see Him come through just as we expected, we can find ourselves frustrated and disappointed — where was God? The truth is, God is always at work. We may not always see Him moving, or understand His plan, but He has something greater in mind.

Disappointment can tempt us to give up on expectations, but it’s an opportunity to strengthen our faith
God’s plans always exceed our expectations
Don't allow your expectations of what God was “supposed” to do get in the way of what He wants to do

If God always met your expectations, how could He ever exceed them?

What areas of your life are you waiting for God to show up? How can you operate from faith in the present as you hope for the future?

2. Endurance and Enjoyment

Job’s story is a powerful example of enduring pain and disappointment without losing faith. Even in his suffering, Job declared, “Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him.” Despite the immense loss, he continued to trust God, showing us that our hope can remain, even in the midst of struggle. Endurance is the ability to trust that God is working, even when we can’t see it.

Endurance strengthens our faith through trials
God hasn’t called us to merely endure life, He’s called us to enjoy it
Enjoying life is appreciating the little, it’s not a pain-free life, but a grateful one

We can say: “God, I don’t understand everything but I trust you in everything”

How has a difficult season strengthened your appreciation for God’s blessings?

Summary

Possibly the greatest source of frustration in life is unmet expectations. The difference between what we expected versus what we experienced often leads us to stop expecting. But there’s an invitation of faith amidst the frustration. Don’t lower your expectations; lift your faith. Give God something to exceed. God can do it, the question is: can you believe it?

Call To Action

Identify areas where you may be limiting God by expecting a specific outcome. Practice finding gratitude by celebrating the little things.
