Brief, but Brilliant

Last Crew's Call to Action

God calls for us to forgive while maintaining boundaries necessary to steward and nurture our souls. This week, lean in to the wisdom of Solomon and study the book of Proverbs to help you develop tools for cultivating Godly relationships while asking God for the courage to forgive. Don’t forget to check out additional resources at https://www.vouschurch.com/care.

Scripture

Psalm 90:12 NIV

“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

Additional Scripture References:

Psalm 102:18, Numbers 14:29-30, Proverbs 10:7, Galatians 6:7, Matthew 5:14, Matthew 5:16

Main Idea

In a culture that treats busyness like a badge of honor, life can feel like a constant sprint. In a culture that glorifies busyness, time often feels disposable. But Scripture reminds us that time is one of the most spiritual and limited gifts we’ve been given. When we slow down long enough to recognize its value, we begin to see that every day holds opportunities to sow into what truly matters. Our days may be brief, but God can use them to build a legacy that outlives us. Legacy grows when we recognize the weight of time and choose to invest it wisely.

Our days may be brief but their impact doesn’t have to be.

1. Legacy Begins with Perspective

The prayer “Teach us to number our days” comes from Moses, not at a moment of triumph, but in the wilderness. Moses wrote these words while leading a generation that lost their promised future, not because the giants were too big, but because their perspective was too small. Moses wasn’t simply asking God to remind them of how short life is, he was asking God to reshape how they saw their lives.

Perspective determines priority. How you see your days shapes how you spend your days. Before legacy ever becomes action, it begins as vision. When God shifts your perspective, He helps you see meaning in the moments you used to overlook and value the time you once wasted.

For your additional study: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” - Psalm 90:12

Counting our days is not about how many we get, but what we do with them.
Small decisions shape big destinies. Legacy is built in daily choices, not grand gestures.
When God shapes your perception, He redirects your priorities.

If you want to make your days count, you must count your days.

What’s a decision that was seemingly small, but had a great impact on your life? What did this teach you about small actions?

2. Legacy Stands on Character

Who you are speaks louder than what you will ever say. Being a person of character and integrity means you are the same everywhere you go – from church on Sunday to the grocery store on Thursday. If you want to be a person who builds a legacy you have to pay attention to who you are becoming. Character is shaped in the quiet places, the consistency, the unseen obedience God uses to form us over time. Legacy requires the slow, steady work of becoming the person God designed you to be.

For your additional study: “Whatever a man sows, he will also reap.” - Galatians 6:7

Legacy is long obedience in the same direction.
Consistency in the right direction creates character.
If you have consistent character, you won’t become a character.

Give God a day, He can change a life. Give God a decade and He can change a legacy.

Where do you feel the tension between who you are now and who God is forming you to become?

Summary

Legacy isn’t accidental, it’s intentional. When God gives us His perspective on time, we begin investing our days wisely. As He shapes our character, our lives become seeds for the future. What we sow today, God multiplies tomorrow. Legacy is built through the TOLL we choose to pay: trusting God with our Tithe, obeying Him through Offering, Loving the future with sacrificial giving, and shining our Light so others see Him. These are the seeds that outlive us. You may never see the full harvest, but through Christ, your life can impact a generation not yet created.

Call To Action

A numbered life becomes a wise life. A wise life becomes a brilliant life. This week, be encouraged: your life may be brief,  but in God’s hands, it can shine far beyond your years.

Reflect: Where have you been spending time without purpose? Are you investing your time into what is eternal, or drifting toward what is temporary? Ask God to realign your priorities.

Respond: Choose one small “penny” practice this week. Five minutes of prayer, reading Scripture or practicing gratitude. Treat those minutes as seeds, not leftovers.

Reframe: You are not running out of time. You are stewarding the time God has given you.

Prayer Prompts

As you reflect on Sunday’s message, here are some guided prayers and scriptures you can use over the next week. If you're looking for ways to grow deeper in this specific area, let these words cover, challenge, and encourage you along the way.

1. Prayer for Perspective on Time

God, teach me to number my days. Help me see my time the way You see it. Show me where I am drifting and give me grace to live with focus, purpose, and wisdom. Let every day count for Your glory. Amen.

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12

2. Prayer for Character and Legacy

Lord, shape my character from the inside out. Form in me integrity, humility, faithfulness, and courage. Let the memory of my life be a blessing to my family, my church, and the people who come after me. May who I am preach louder than what I say. Amen.

Be very careful, then, how you live…making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:15-16

3. Prayer for a Generous Heart

Jesus, thank You for giving everything for me. Soften my heart wherever I hold back. Help me to see my time, my resources, and my finances as seed in Your hands. Lead me to give back in a way that reflects trust, obedience, and love for the  future. Amen.

Be wise in the way you act toward outsides; make the most of every opportunity. Colossians 4:5

4. Prayer for Future Generations

Heavenly Father, I pray for those “not yet created” who will one day worship in your presence and call on your name. Use my life, my yes, and my seed to make a way for them. Let my brief life shine with Your brilliance so that generations to come will praise you. Amen.

“Show me, Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is.” Psalm 39:4-5

Scripture

Ephesians 3:20-21 NKJV

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Additional Scripture References: John 11:32; Job 13:15; John 11:5; Matthew 14:31

Main Idea

Life often doesn't meet our expectations, leading to frustration and disappointment. We may hope for one outcome, only to be met with something entirely different, creating a gap between what we expected and what we experienced. This gap can lead us to question God, our faith, and our hope. But through stories like that of Lazarus and Job, we learn that God isn’t in the business of just meeting expectations, He’s in the business of exceeding them.

God’s power to perform exceeds our ability to ask

1. Hope and Expectation

Faith grows through hope and trusting God’s timing. Positive expectations can fuel faith, while unmet expectations can lead to disappointment. Often, we expect something specific from God but find ourselves limiting Him to only a particular outcome. When we don’t see Him come through just as we expected, we can find ourselves frustrated and disappointed — where was God? The truth is, God is always at work. We may not always see Him moving, or understand His plan, but He has something greater in mind.

Disappointment can tempt us to give up on expectations, but it’s an opportunity to strengthen our faith
God’s plans always exceed our expectations
Don't allow your expectations of what God was “supposed” to do get in the way of what He wants to do

If God always met your expectations, how could He ever exceed them?

What areas of your life are you waiting for God to show up? How can you operate from faith in the present as you hope for the future?

2. Endurance and Enjoyment

Job’s story is a powerful example of enduring pain and disappointment without losing faith. Even in his suffering, Job declared, “Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him.” Despite the immense loss, he continued to trust God, showing us that our hope can remain, even in the midst of struggle. Endurance is the ability to trust that God is working, even when we can’t see it.

Endurance strengthens our faith through trials
God hasn’t called us to merely endure life, He’s called us to enjoy it
Enjoying life is appreciating the little, it’s not a pain-free life, but a grateful one

We can say: “God, I don’t understand everything but I trust you in everything”

How has a difficult season strengthened your appreciation for God’s blessings?

Summary

Possibly the greatest source of frustration in life is unmet expectations. The difference between what we expected versus what we experienced often leads us to stop expecting. But there’s an invitation of faith amidst the frustration. Don’t lower your expectations; lift your faith. Give God something to exceed. God can do it, the question is: can you believe it?

Call To Action

Identify areas where you may be limiting God by expecting a specific outcome. Practice finding gratitude by celebrating the little things.
