Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons. These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter), James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means “sons of thunder”), Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

We’ve all experienced waiting on a call from a friend or waiting to hear back from an employer about a new opportunity. Once we hear back from them, we can finally let out a sigh of relief. The moment is confirmed and the plans are in order. But when it comes to God’s call on our life we may have reasons why we don’t wish to respond. We may feel unqualified, unprepared, or even confused as to what God is calling us to. Hoping that a career, business, or relationship will define who we are and confirm our calling, but God says, “You are enough, I believe in you.” Just like the young men, the disciples, who dropped everything they had ever known to follow Jesus, we don’t have to be in a certain status or position to be called. Our calling is already confirmed and it's simple. Follow Jesus, serve people, and act according to the gifts he has placed in our lives. Jesus initiated the call, now it's our time to pick up the phone.
Your calling is not on backorder, it’s not out of stock, it’s not pending—it’s confirmed.
Jesus called us out from where we were to give us salvation. We come to where Jesus is for discipleship. As mighty as salvation is, it is just the first step in a long journey of our calling to be with and like Jesus. Do not confuse a career with a calling. We network to find a career, but withdraw to find calling.
Before you were born, Jesus crafted a purpose for you. This divine appointment is exactly where the enemy tries to instill confusion and anxiety. Know that when you focus on Jesus rather than on your ability, you can stand firm and further the Kingdom through your work.
Today we can set aside our insecurities and know that the calling is not about us, but about the one who is calling us, Jesus. The calling is not about the path we take, but the person, Jesus. The calling is about knowing how he lived, so we can also live it out. When we do the things he did such as praying, fasting, honoring rest, fighting for justice, we set ourselves apart for him. When we walk with Jesus the pressure of knowing what we are supposed to be doing comes off. Then we can walk in confidence with our greatest purpose of knowing him and making him known.
Through focusing on Jesus, you will experience a realignment in your work and spirit. This week where can you exchange old habits for those that resemble what Jesus exemplified?
