[lead dropcap="yes"]Servant Leadership is a form of leadership that is counter-cultural to society’s top dog mentality. One that transcends the conventional wisdom of the world we live in, and celebrates those who are intentional about doing the unthinkable in the realm of leadership - serving.[/lead]

At VOUS Church we always say, "Culture is either built by design, or happens by default." Building a culture of servant leadership doesn't happen overnight, but we've outlined some practical handles to ensure you’re embedding these values into the DNA of your organization.

Don't Talk About It, Be About It.

Servant leadership comes from the top, and in order for it to be effective, authenticity is one of its key variables. Without authenticity, servant leadership borders the fine line of manipulation. Make sure you are always serving those you lead, before asking them to do the same with others.

Be Willing To Go

You can't lead people to places in which you are not willing to go yourself. As a leader, you must be willing and ready to serve in the trenches with those you are leading. No leader is beyond serving in the parking lot.

Develop Other Leaders

One of the truest ways to exercise servant leadership is to develop other leaders. A self-serving leader neglects developing other leaders in fear that in the future, they would outshine him. A true servant leader is not threatened by this notion, as he recognizes it's not about titles. Train and raise up leaders, teach them what you know, and allow them to flourish.

Honor Commitment Over Talent

We live in a culture that loves to praise the talent and individual efforts of one, rather than the sacrifice and collective efforts of many. When you cater to talent over commitment, you are putting your organization in a position of vulnerability. When you cater to talent, those talented contributors may grow prideful over time, and develop a sense of entitlement. As leaders, it’s important to identify pride in those we lead and tactfully address that issue before it gets out of hand.Honor those who stay the course, and are willing to serve the house wherever there is a gap that must be filled.

Signs of a Thriving Culture of Servant Leadership

So how do you know you exemplify a culture of Servant Leadership? Here are the Signs:1.) People are walking in community2.) Other leaders are being developed and rising up3.) People are around when they don't have to be around4.) People are helping out/willing to help out in multiple areas, rather then limiting themselves to one specific area. These are just a few of many practical handles to ensure you are charting the course for your organization to put servant leadership into practice.
