[lead dropcap="yes"]Excellence is our spirit. No matter the skill, when we fully utilize our gifts with the spirit of excellence, we have the opportunity to invade culture by sharing the greatest message of all-time, Jesus.[/lead]Pedro Tuma, one of the leaders that makes the creative vision of VOUS Church come to life, is no stranger to the design world. The HypeBeast-featured, Kanye-approved, all around cool Creative Director, loving husband and devoted father of two, has a portfolio of clients ranging from Under Armour to Disney. Despite all these accomplishments, Pedro pours heart and soul into building the local church. We couldn't think of anyone better to share five thoughts that we can adopt to help us in our creative process.
1. Describe your creative process.
I believe the creative process for a creative never stops. No matter where I'm at or who I'm with, I'm always pulling references and inspiration from my surroundings. The creative process is not a situation where one idea just strikes you and you run with it. You have ongoing discoveries, and there are ongoing creative revelations. It's really helpful to be working towards a specific destination, but along the way, you must allow yourself room for your ideas to blossom, take root, and grow. Always trust the process.
2. What are some of the most essential disciplines as a designer?
Never stop learning. Things evolve and change. Keep learning and developing your skills. Push yourself daily, and be intentional about allocating time to get better. When you feel like giving up, just keep going. Surround yourself with people who are better than you. Know more than you're supposed to.
3. As a designer, how do you balance staying on trend, and setting the trend?
Staying on trend is easy. It's doing what everyone else is doing. Setting the trend takes vision and knowledge of the industry. Seeing into the future and knowing what people will be into 1 year from now. That takes work and dedication. It also takes boldness to aim to set the trend instead of following the status quo. Do that, take chances.[rev_slider design]
4. When deciding on creative direction for a project, what is the first piece of the puzzle?
The first piece is always knowing the consumer, or your audience. Messaging is super important. We need to ask the questions: What message are we trying to get across? How do we do that in a way that really sticks with your audience?
5. Give us one final thought for young designers just diving into this world.
Failure is part of the process. A lesson learned by failing turns a failure into a win.
