How long have you been going to VOUS Church?
A little over a year.
What has God done in your life through finding this community?
VOUS Church has brought me back to God through a deeper relationship with him. I grew up in the church, but never really understood the idea of a relationship. I’ve come to understand he desires to have one with us. No matter how far I’ve ever ran from God, the calling has always been there. VOUS brought me back to heart of God.
What was your situation like before you found this community?
My parents divorced at a very young age. I grew up in Indiana with my mom. My childhood was very, very difficult. My mom met my stepfather, the second one, who was an alcoholic and was physically abusive. It was crazy. Friday nights he would go and blow his check, and we would have to pack up to go stay with someone because we were fearful. That was 14 years of hell, pretty much. In the middle of all of that, I was born again at 10. I’m Jewish by birth so it was kind of an odd thing. I went to a revival with a friend and the preacher said, “Well, you need to know Jesus or you’re going to burn in hell.” I was like, OK, cool. Let’s go! I accepted Jesus. I kind of found my hiding place, my refuge from the physical abuse within the church.
For those who may be going through the same issues that you've gone through, what would you tell them?
We are sons and daughters of God, and his love is passionate and fierce. No matter how tough of a life you’ve had, whether you’ve been through abuse, divorce, or whatever it may be, God’s grace is still there. He still loves you, he’s still passionate about you, and he’ll always be there for you. Don’t let anyone take that away from you.
When you think of 'VOUS Church,' what's the first thing that comes to mind?
Grace. Pure Grace. Pure love. I can’t just come up with one. It’s just family, love, and grace. It’s all that. We have something so unique, so special here within the VOUS community, within the Crews, within the different teams. I’ve been to many different churches and it’s something special that I can’t even explain. It’s people caring and wanting to see you be better than who you are today. To lift you up, to bring you out of that hole, those waves, or the storm - whatever you’re going through.
